Thieu Nguyen – who goes by the nickname Hana – has been living in London for 20 years, having moved over from Thai Nguyen in Vietnam when she was 16. She lives near Lavender Hill with her partner and their four-year-old twins, who she describes as 'double trouble'! Hana is something of a super woman who also runs three other businesses – a fish and chip shop, a Vietnamese restaurant and a travel company. Wow!

What was your lightbulb moment?
People often ask me what inspired me to launch my own nail salon and it was about so much more than just beauty and business.
For years, I juggled jobs that left me feeling empty. Then, one day when I was enjoying a fabulous manicure and it hit me – that simple experience was pure magic. That revelation inspired me to build a vibrant, homely space where everyone can experience that little spark of joy. We were the first nail shop to open in Lavender Hill and we took over what had been a hairdresser’s shop. Pretty much straight away we were busy!
What’s the best thing about running your own business?
Running my own salon gives me purpose and gives me the freedom to create something that truly reflects who I am. Watching it bring joy and confidence to others every single day is a bonus. And I can manage my own time so, if it’s quiet, I get to spend more time with my twins.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?
Building consistency in quality and clientele was tough, as trust and loyalty take time to develop. And the nail business does have seasonal peaks and troughs. I learned to stand out through genuine service and memorable experiences, not just quality nails.
What advice would you give other business owners facing similar challenges?
My biggest piece of advice is: don’t lose sight of your “why.”
Here is what I have learned:
- Remember why you started – that passion is your fuel.
- Be patient with yourself – growth takes time.
- Take care of you – your energy sets the tone of your business.
- Build relationships, not just revenue.
At the end of the day, business ownership is about heart and hustle and relief. Keep going, keep learning, and never forget how far you have come.
What’s your super power at work?
It would be turning someone’s mood around – one manicure at a time. Through color, design and conversation, I help customers walk out feeling lighter, happier and a little more like themselves again.
And of course, attention to detail is my magic touch – whether it is matching the perfect shade to someone’s skin tone or creating a nail art design that reflects their personality.
What’s your mantra for business?
Our success rests on our customers so I believe in brilliant customer service. I get my customers comfortable, I look after them, I chat and laugh with them as they’ve become friends. If a new customer comes in, I learn their name, what shape of nail they like, how short they like – so the second time they come they don’t need to tell me, I remember. We try to remember all the things that our clients want so the service is really personal and friendly.
What’s December like for you?
We work extra hours for Christmas because it’s such a busy time. We’ll probably do 9am – 8pm to fit in as many bookings as we can.
What are the nail trends for this Christmas?
Rich reds and deep emerald greens are back in force. Glitter gradients, chrome tips, metallic golds and silver are big. These finishes add glam without being overly themed.
What do you love about Christmas?
Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year. The salon feels extra cozy – full of laughter, sparkles, and that joyful holiday buzz. I love helping clients get ready for their celebrations – choosing festive colors, adding glitter and seeing that little sparkle of happiness when they look at their nails.
Tell us about your favourite animal?
A dolphin – they’re playful, smart and always bringing good vibes. I like dolphins because they are all about connection, communication and joy – the same energy I try to bring into my nail salon every day.
Finally….Do you prefer cats or dogs?
I have a very clever dog back in Vietnam called Bong – I live in the UK more than I live in my country but when I go home he’s so happy to see me, he remembers me. And when I bring my luggage out he knows I will fly away and he lies down on my case saying, ‘Please don’t go’. He’s so sweet.
