Who can open a business account?

Are you eligible to open a business account?

If you are registered as a limited company in the UK you’re most likely good to go. However, we don’t support certain types of businesses – like those involved in cryptocurrency, gambling, or anything listed on our prohibited activities list.

Turnover eligibility

We get it – one month you haven’t made any sales, the next you’re growing fast. Whether your business is still in starter mode or you’re about to onboard your first customer, there’s no minimum turnover required to open an account with us.

Transaction limit

To keep your account safe, we apply limits on things like card payments, ATM withdrawals, and bank transfers. These limits are designed to protect your money – not slow you down. If a legitimate transaction ever gets caught in the net, our team will work quickly to help sort it out. You can see the full list of account limits here.

What do I need to open a business account for a limited company?

There are some eligibility requirements to open a business account with ANNA. We’ll need to check the information and the documents you share with us. Here’s what you need and how you can speed things up.

Photo ID and proof of address

We’ll need a photo of your full driving licence or a photo of your valid passport.

Take the photo on a flat, clear surface and make sure all four corners of the ID can be seen.

If you don’t have a driving licence or a valid passport, you can take a recent photo of yourself to either your bank, solicitor, or accountant to get it certified. To verify your address we might ask for a utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement. They should be dated within the last three months.

Your company must be registered with Companies House

If you’re only planning to do it, you can register your limited company through ANNA – it will make the business account opening process smoother since we’ll already have all the information.

Tell us what you do

To set up your ANNA account, we’ll just need a few basic details about your business, like what you do and how you earn your income. It’s quick, straightforward, and helps us tailor the account to fit your needs perfectly.

When does it make sense to go limited?

Going limited isn’t just a fancy title – it can seriously boost your bottom line if the timing’s right. Here’s when it might be worth making the leap:

You’re turning a tidy profit

Sole traders pay income tax on all their profits, which can get pricey once you’re earning more than about £50k–£100k. Limited companies pay Corporation Tax (which is lower), and directors can take some income as dividends – often saving a chunk in tax.

You’re about to lose your personal allowance

Once your income creeps over £100k, your personal allowance starts to vanish – and the tax bill can sting. Limited companies don’t have this issue. The company pays tax on its profits, and you can still take a salary up to your personal allowance to keep that tax-free chunk.

National Insurance doesn't apply to LTDs

Sole traders have to pay National Insurance on profits. Company dividends? Not subject to NI. That can mean extra money in your pocket – especially if you’re making serious profit.

You want to protect your personal assets

Limited liability means your personal stuff (house, savings, childhood teddy bear) is protected if things go wrong. Sole traders don’t get that safety net.

You want more flexibility

Limited companies can claim more expenses and reliefs – think R&D, capital allowances, pension contributions. Plus, you can leave profits in the business to invest later.

You can handle a bit more admin (or get ANNA to help)

There’s more paperwork – annual accounts, Corporation Tax returns, and some director duties. You’ll need to play by the rules when it comes to salary and dividends. But if the numbers work, the extra admin often pays for itself. And don’t forget about ANNA +Taxes – we can help with that extra admin.

Why going limited can mean less tax pain (if you're earning over £100k)

If your business is bringing in more than £100k in profit, switching to a limited company could save you a decent chunk in tax. Here’s how:

Corporation Tax wins

Profit between £50k and £250k? You’ll pay Corporation Tax at 25% (or slightly less with marginal relief). That’s still well below the 40% or 45% Income Tax sole traders face – and don’t forget, they also get hit with National Insurance. Ouch.

Keep your profits in your pocket (for later)

Sole traders are taxed on all their profits, every year. Companies, on the other hand, can keep some profit in the business – no personal tax until you actually take it out. Handy if you’re planning for the future (or a rainy day).

Smarter pay with dividends

Take a modest salary, top it up with dividends, and you could pay less tax overall. Dividends aren’t subject to National Insurance, and rates start at just 8.75%. Plus, you get a £500 dividend allowance – nice.

Pension perks

Limited companies can make employer pension contributions that reduce taxable profits. It’s a savvy way to take money out of the business – and something sole traders can’t do.

Extra reliefs and allowances

Companies get more tools in the tax-saving toolbox – like capital allowances and R&D tax relief. More opportunities to shrink your tax bill.

Frequently asked questions

What is a business bank account?

A business bank account is like a personal account – but with its work trousers on. It’s opened in your company’s name and used to manage all your business payments in and out. You can move money, set up direct debits, and pay with a debit card – all while keeping your business finances separate from your personal stash.

Is ANNA a fully regulated UK bank?

Nope – ANNA isn’t a bank. We’re a business account provider that falls under the category of an e‑money institution. We offer clever tools like expense tracking and tax reminders, but we don’t lend money or hold deposits ourselves. Instead, we operate under our partner Railsr’s e‑money licence, and your money is held by regulated third‑party institutions.

Is ANNA FSCS protected?

FSCS protection (that’s the scheme that protects up to £85,000 in UK banks) doesn’t apply to ANNA accounts – because we’re not a bank. Instead, we use safeguarding. Your money is kept in a dedicated, ring-fenced account that can’t be touched or loaned out – not by us, not by anyone. It’s a different kind of protection, but it still keeps your money safe.

Can I pay cheques into my ANNA account?

Afraid not – ANNA doesn’t do cheques (too old-school). If someone gives you one, you’ll need to pay it in elsewhere and transfer the money over. But we do accept cash deposits via PayPoint, which is much more 2025.

Can I get an overdraft?

No overdrafts here – ANNA’s all about helping you stay in the black, not the red. That said, we may offer some credit options to eligible customers. It’s not a loan party, but we’re not total teetotallers either.

Can I open a limited company account if I have multiple directors?

Yes you can. ANNA supports joint accounts for limited companies. Open the account first, then give our support team a shout – they’ll help add your fellow directors so everyone can hop on the ANNA app and run things together.

Can I have an IBAN to receive foreign payments?

You can indeed. Every ANNA business account comes with a UK sort code, account number, and a shiny IBAN – perfect for receiving payments from abroad. You’ll find any fees in our pricing table, all laid out nice and clear.

Can I apply from outside the UK?

Yes, you can apply from anywhere – but you’ll need to be a UK resident to actually open an ANNA account. Passport stamps won’t cut it.

Do you have credit checks?

Nope – ANNA doesn’t run credit checks. We just verify your identity to comply with anti‑money‑laundering rules. It’s fast, painless, and won’t leave a mark on your credit score.

How long does it take to open an ANNA business account?

If your documents are ready and readable (no smudged selfies, please), it usually takes just 3–5 minutes to open your account. If something needs a closer look, it might take a bit longer – but we’re quick.

What is Open Banking?

Open Banking is a secure way for you to link different bank accounts and apps together. It gives you a smarter overview of your finances, all in one place. ANNA uses TrueLayer to bring transactions from your other accounts into the ANNA app – no mental maths required.

What’s the difference between an e‑money account and a bank account?

E‑money accounts (like ANNA’s) are run by licensed financial institutions, but they’re not banks. Your money can be stored, sent and received, but it can’t be lent out. That’s because it’s held in a special safeguarding account, rather than being covered by FSCS protection. Banks can loan out deposits, but offer FSCS cover up to £85,000. Different models – same goal: keep your money secure.
